ADA Accommodation
SFFMA provides accommodations for those candidates who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as disabled. Candidates seeking special accommodations must submit a request form with formal documentation (such as a letter from the doctor or a letter from their organizations’s Human Resource Department) to the SFFMA testing office. The documentation submitted should not be older than 5 years. All accommodation requests must be submitted to the Austin office at the time an individual emails SFFMA to obtain verification of eligibility to test.

Allowable Accommodations
Candidates can obtain accommodation in one or more of the following ways:
· Establishment of a testing room to oneself so the candidate can read the questions out loud without disturbing other candidates.
· The test questions may be displayed in a larger font (up to 7% larger). SFFMA’s online testing platform allows for control of font size by the candidate.
· The test may be divided into two parts, with up to an hour break between parts. The candidate will not have access to the first half of the exam once it has been turned into the proctor. This accommodation may be limited to hard copy exams only.
· The test may be presented on off-white paper (i.e., cream colored). SFFMA’s online testing platform allows for this capability.
· The candidate may use highlighters or a highlighter sheet (hard-copy exams only).

Other Requests
Any requests for accommodations not listed above must be submitted to the Certification Board via the Zone Representative prior to the exam date. The request will be reviewed by the Certification Board and the candidate will be notified of the decision. Anyone requesting accommodations must still meet the requirements of the test as established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For example, someone requesting accommodations for Firefighter I must meet the standard as referenced in NFPA 1001.

Comfort Aids
Comfort aids may be allowed in the written exam room following visual inspection by the testing center staff before being brought into the room. Visual inspection will be done by examining the item without directly touching it or the candidate, and without asking the candidate to remove the item.
